Lawyer Smuggles “Drug-Laced” Papers Into County Jail

JailCellOpen

In January 2025, a Jacksonville attorney went to visit a client at Duval County Jail, bringing legal documents and other items. When the documents were inspected, it turned out that the papers were soaked in a substance known as ‘K2’ or synthetic cannabis. The attorney had allegedly reached an agreement with some inmates and their families to smuggle this substance into the jail in exchange for money. Now, though, the attorney faces joining his clients, not getting them out of jail.

Drug Smuggling Is A Serious Crime

The security of Florida jails is taken extremely seriously, and attempts to bring contraband inside are considered criminal. Whether this action is prosecuted as a misdemeanor or felony will depend on the nature of the substance involved, meaning that a potential sentence might be between one and five years for a first offense. In addition, most of the time, someone who is charged with this kind of offense will often face additional drug charges for possession or trafficking.

As of this writing, the attorney faces two counts of giving drugs to an inmate, two counts of ‘giving or receiving unauthorized communication’ from an inmate, and four other felonies. He has not currently been charged with possession of synthetic cannabis, though many people in this situation are; the ultimate discretion in this type of case is ultimately up to the state’s attorney.

The Investigation Is Ongoing

It is important to keep in mind that the attorney is one of 21 people arrested in a months-long investigation at Duval County Jail. Data from the Duval County Sheriff’s Office estimates that there were 23 drug overdoses in 2023, after which an investigation began into methods. It was ultimately successful in reducing overdoses, with only 9 occurring in 2024, but as of this writing, the investigation remains ongoing.

While hopefully, you never have to worry about your attorney engaging in this kind of behavior, it is important to remember just how seriously smuggling contraband into a prison is taken. If you attempt to bring drugs into a facility, and are caught, the consequences are quite severe – in addition to the eight felony counts the Jacksonville attorney faces, he will certainly lose his license if convicted, affecting his livelihood after he is released.
