Oscar Pistorius: Stand Your Ground
Oscar Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder. This case has grabbed the attention of the international media because he was a recent participant in the Olympics and set the world record for the Paralympic games in the men’s 400 meters. He was often referred to by the nickname ‘Blade Runner’ because of the prosthetic he had.
There have been rumors from some media outlets that he shot his girlfriend because he thought she was a random person invading his home. If this case were in Florida, there could potentially be a Stand Your Ground motion brought on his behalf.
Here in Florida, there have been numerous Stand Your Ground defense motions that have been filed since the law went into effect. A Stand Your Ground motion is heard prior to a trial and if successful can sometime result in the dismissal in an entire case.
The Oscar Pistorius case has a long way to go before it will be over. It would not be unheard of for a case like this here in Florida to last for a couple of years before it is resolved.
